Useful information about the Christian Faith

Perhaps you do not know anything about the Christian Faith. Maybe this is the first time that you have read anything written for you by a Christian, or maybe you are looking at this Web Site because you have been directed here by a leaflet which you have read, and you want to know more. You may find that this part of our Site will give you lots of things to think about. When you have more questions, you can either email us or write to the Church office; you’ll find details on the Contacts page; or you may like to come to one of our meetings.

If you do not live in Northampton, you can call one of us and we can direct you to someone who lives near you, who will be able to help you further.

In our Church we believe that the Bible is the Word of God, and therefore true. The Bible teaches that the Lord Jesus Christ is relevant to everybody, whatever your age or situation in life. This means that there is no one in whom the Lord Jesus Christ is not interested!

Maybe you are still at school and wondering about what lies ahead in life …

There is no such thing as being too young to believe in the Lord Jesus. He is the very best foundation for your life, and it is not hard to ask him to be your friend and the leader of your life. You may like to call one of our Youth Leaders for advice, or to ask for a book  written especially for young people.

Maybe you are an atheist …

It may be that you do not believe that there is a God. We agree that you cannot prove God by scientific experiment – but neither can you prove that there is no God! We believe that there is much evidence all around us in the world that there is a God, and that he has made himself known to us in the Lord Jesus Christ. We invite you to make an honest assessment of the evidence by reading the first part of the New Testament. Find a Bible (we can always give you one if you would like) and read the Gospel of Luke. Its writer was a journalist amongst other things. He had a wonderful eye for detail, and you will be captivated by his account of the life of Jesus.

Maybe you are an agnostic …

Being an agnostic means that you do not have a view on the most important issues of life. We are surrounded by evidence about God, and the Bible is full of facts about his love for us. We encourage you to look again at the evidence.

Maybe you are successful in your life …

Perhaps you have been successful in all that you have attempted, and you have earned a secure position. You may feel that in spite of your success there are still parts of your life which are not yet complete. You should remember that there is more to life than just material things, and that completeness comes only when you have peace with God.

Maybe you hurt inside …

Life can be hard and throw many problems and much sadness at you. Perhaps other people have hurt you. Perhaps you have made bad mistakes. The Bible tells us that Jesus invites all to trust him, even those with the greatest needs.

Maybe you are a religious person …

You may have attended Sunday School and Church all your life. However, we must tell you that the Christian Faith has its focus in the person of Jesus Christ, not in going to meetings, or having religious opinions. These are not the same as a personal faith in Jesus. Being a Christian is a personal matter, between you and God through the living Lord Jesus. Of course it is right to try to live a good and decent life, to treat others well and to be a good citizen – nothing less is required of any of us. But even our best is not good enough to give us peace with God. For that, we all need Jesus, because only he can heal the breach between us and God.

Maybe you are concerned about the world around you …

You may care passionately about the world we live in and feel deeply about the many things that are wrong; things such as the environment, hunger, cruelty to animals, war, exploitation of the weak and vulnerable and others. You are prepared to use your time and energy in seeking to change things for the better. Such concerns are very close to the heart of God himself. Jesus taught this when he said that the second commandment is for us to love our neighbour as ourselves. But you need to see that Jesus taught that there is a first commandment, which comes before that one. This tells us that we should love God with all our heart, mind, soul and strength. God wants our concern for the world around us to be in the context of our personal devotion to him above everything else.

Maybe you think that all religions lead to God …

This may seem a popular view but it doesn’t really make sense, because the different religions all have their own specific teachings about God and how to know him. Jesus himself was absolutely uncompromising when he said “I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through me.” Jesus is unique; he alone claimed to be God himself; he said that he and the Father are one, and that anyone who had seen him, had seen the Father. No one else, in all of history, has made such a claim – and by his life and work given evidence that the claim is true.

Maybe you are searching for the meaning of life …

Perhaps you are looking for meaning and purpose in life and for real happiness. Whether the above descriptions apply to you or not, the Gospel - or Good News of the Bible – assures you that the truth about life itself is to be found in Jesus, and in him alone. The message of Christianity is that we can know Jesus now, by the power of the Holy Spirit, as we turn to him  in trust. We have all failed to live as God would have us live; the Bible calls such failure ‘sin’. Only Jesus, by his life and death, can forgive sin. And because he rose from death, is alive now and cannot die again, we can know him and have sure faith that he is our Saviour.
